What is a lung function test/Pulmonary function test/spirometry?

A pulmonary function test, also known as a lung function test, is a medical procedure that involves an evaluation of the patient's respiratory system. This test is used to assess the function of lung capacity as well as the lung and chest wall mechanics. The pulmonary function test procedure also includes a review of the patient's medical history, a chest x-ray, and an arterial blood gas analysis to determine whether or not the patient has a respiratory disease.
The lung function tests gauge:
– The amount of air you can take into the lungs
– The amount of air you can blow out of your lungs and the speed with which you can do it
– The efficiency with which the lungs deliver oxygen to the blood.
– Muscle strength in the respiratory muscles
