What is an undescended testis?

It is also known as cryptorchidism. It is caused by the testis failing to descend into the scrotal sac. There is a possibility of the testis to descend spontaneously up to the age of 6 months. Delayed surgery may affect fertility in adulthood and raise the risk of testicular cancer.

When the testis may be felt in the inguinal area, an open orchiopexy is performed. In orchiopexy, a small incision is taken and the testis is guided through it from the inguinal region to the scrotal sac. If the testis cannot be felt in the inguinal area, laparoscopic orchiopexy is performed.
