Gastroenterology surgery is used to treat diseases and disorders of the digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, small and large intestines, and rectum. The procedure may be used to remove a malignant or noncancerous tumor, as well as a damaged area of the body. A gastrointestinal surgeon can also address problems such as an abdominal wall hernia. Other gastrointestinal diseases that can be addressed surgically include:
Gallbladder disease. When there is a problem with the gallbladder, it can be surgically removed using cholecystectomy surgery.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Hiatal hernias. GERD can occur as a result of a hiatal hernia, which occurs when the stomach pushes through the diaphragm. A surgical procedure known as fundoplication can correct it.
IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease)
Appendicitis, or appendicitis, is an inflammation of the appendix. Appendectomy can be used to remove it.
Diverticular disease. Diverticulums are small pouches or pockets that can form in the colon. They might become inflamed and painful. If a person has a large number of diverticula, bowel resection surgery to remove that section of the intestine may be indicated.
